About Paul
A life spent between the layers.
Upholsterer and designer Paul Savage has spent more than forty years learning what lies beneath the fabric — and how to make it last another hundred.

The story
Forty years, and still learning from every chair.
Paul Savage has worked as an upholsterer and designer for over four decades. In that time he has re-webbed, re-sprung and re-covered everything from humble kitchen chairs to grand country-house sofas — and designed and built new pieces from nothing more than a sketch and a conversation.
His workshop in Worcester is where the traditional craft lives on: herringbone webbing tacked taut, springs lashed by hand, horsehair teased and stitched into crisp edges, calico pulled tight before the final cover goes on.
Whether you have a family heirloom that needs rescuing, a commission in mind or simply want advice on fabric, Paul brings the same patience and care to every piece that comes through the door.

“A well-made chair should outlive the person who made it. That's the job.”
— Paul Savage
How Paul works
Principles, stitched in.
Honest advice
Paul will tell you plainly whether a piece is worth restoring, what it needs and what it will cost. No surprises.
Traditional materials
Jute webbing, coil springs, horsehair, calico and hand-stitched edges — the methods that made antiques last.
One pair of hands
The person who quotes your job is the person who strips, builds and finishes it. Every stitch is Paul's.
A designer's eye
Proportion, fabric and finish are considered as carefully as the build, so the piece belongs in your room.
